The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane

Does paying more buy proof?

The maintained sources do not give these cosmetic retinoids the trial support that prescription retinoids like tretinoin and adapalene have. If you want one anyway, the $13 Ordinary is the sensible buy: it says how strong it is and costs about a seventh of the Avène per millilitre. The checked CeraVe pages do not state how much retinol is inside. All three are night-only, with sunscreen by day.

Qué coincide

All three are night-use, fragrance-free cosmetic retinoids that tell you to wear sunscreen by day.

Qué cambia

Actives differ (1% retinol vs undeclared retinol vs 0.05% retinaldehyde) and price per mL spans nearly 7×.

Límite de la evidencia

Evidence on this page supports the ingredient, product type, or prevention step. It doesn't prove any one of these exact products is better.

Lo que los estudios encontraron de verdad

Three retinoid serums, three prices, and three different relationships to the maintained evidence set. The ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed searches identified no product study for one brand; another brand appears often but not for this serum; and the third tested a different retinaldehyde cream under an internal code.

Our search found no study of this product or this brand

The Ordinary Retinol 1% in Squalane

The maintained ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed searches returned no record naming this serum or another product from The Ordinary. One registered trial does name the parent company, Deciem, as a collaborator: NCT07774000, a 12-week placebo-controlled study of a topical niacinamide riboside made by another company. It had not started as of August 20, 2026 and has posted no results.

Salvedad: That trial tests a different ingredient for a different sponsor, and no Deciem product is named as an intervention in it.

~Other CeraVe products were studied, but not this serum

CeraVe Resurfacing Retinol Serum

Twenty-five registered studies name a CeraVe product and six have posted results; none of them is the Resurfacing Retinol Serum. The largest, NCT04724967, tested the Hydrating Cleanser and Moisturizing Cream in 528 people with diabetes-related skin changes, with CeraVe as a named partner. This serum does not declare how much retinol it contains, and those 25 records provide no measurement of it.

Salvedad: That study had one group, nothing to compare it against, and no starting measurements for its skin scales, so it cannot show what the products caused.

~A different Avène cream was tested, not this one

Avène Hyaluron Activ Retinal 0.05% Lifting Cream

The maintained ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed searches returned no record naming this cream. Avène's parent company did run a randomized split-face trial of a different retinaldehyde cream, registered only under the internal code RV4983A (NCT06942403, 66 people, three months) and published in J Cosmet Dermatol in 2025; the company ran it, the untreated half of the face was the only control, and no results were posted to the registry. For retinaldehyde as an ingredient, a 44-week trial in 125 people that compared it against the same cream base without the active ingredient measured wrinkles and roughness from skin replicas, but a later critical review found no retinaldehyde-versus-plain-base difference it could tell apart from chance for either outcome.

Salvedad: Neither study tested the current cream reviewed on this page. Cosmetic trials often use internal formula codes, the older trial included manufacturer-affiliated authors, and within-group improvement must not be presented as a significant advantage over vehicle.

ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed were checked on August 20, 2026; the maintained searches identified no evidence for any of the three serums as sold. Two of the brands have run or joined studies of other products, and that is a fact about the brand rather than about what is in these bottles.

Cómo buscamos estudios sobre estos productos exactos

Última búsqueda:

For each evidence row, search the quoted evidence-row product name, then the quoted brand plus the distinctive product-name tokens. A brand-wide statement additionally requires a quoted brand-name search. Formula codes are added only when an official or study source discloses them.

  • ClinicalTrials.gov: Registered studies returned by exact product-name, brand-plus-product-name, and disclosed internal formula-code searches.
  • PubMed: Indexed records returned by exact product-name and brand-plus-distinctive-product-token searches.

Lo que esto no le dice: A negative maintained search is a dated coverage statement, not proof that no study exists in another database, language, registry, sponsor archive, unpublished report, or differently named formula.

Notas y fuentes
  1. Retinol: an independent 2021 review found 9 trials that tested retinol against the same cream with the retinol left out — 4 showed nothing, 5 were positive but poorly run. Verbatim: "weak evidence for retinol potentially having a mild ameliorating effect on fine facial skin wrinkle lines only."
  2. Retinaldehyde: a 125-person, 44-week study tested 0.05% retinaldehyde, tretinoin, and retinal vehicle on photoaged facial skin. Although the original abstract emphasizes change within the retinaldehyde group, the later critical review found no statistically significant retinaldehyde-versus-vehicle difference for wrinkle depth or roughness. The authors included manufacturer staff, the formulas differ from this current cream, and the maintained PubMed search identified no retinol-versus-retinaldehyde head-to-head.
  3. The checked CeraVe brand page and retail listings did not declare its retinol concentration as of Aug 20, 2026.
  4. The Avène product is the Canadian replacement for the RetrinAL 0.05 cream we used (same 0.05% retinaldehyde, now with niacinamide); the old RetrinAL line is no longer sold in Canada. Its $89.00 regular price is listed; a $71.20 sale was ending the day we checked.
  5. Prescription retinoids (tretinoin, adapalene) carry the strong, moderate-certainty acne recommendation in the 2024 AAD guideline; the maintained sources identified no comparable trial base for these cosmetic products. ClinicalTrials.gov listed 46 interventional retinol trials for acne or wrinkles on Aug 20, 2026 (a free-text count that overstates the usable evidence).
  6. ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed searches through Aug 20, 2026 identified no head-to-head study of these exact products.
