Does the brand name buy anything?
Moisturizing itself helps eczema-prone skin — low-certainty trials show fewer flares — but the maintained evidence set through Aug 20, 2026 contains no trial showing that one of these creams beats another, ceramide branding included. We've kept CeraVe in the routine for years; the Equate tub is the same format at a bit over half the price. Buy whichever you'll use generously.

Equate Moisturizing Cream
The maintained ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed searches returned no study record naming this cream as of August 20, 2026. At ingredient level, the closest work is a 20-patient randomized forearm-controlled study in which four drugstore moisturizers, including CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, were applied to one forearm and nothing to the other for four weeks: surface hydration improved, water loss through the skin did not change significantly, and the authors reported the study was underpowered. Those results were reported for the four moisturizers pooled together, so they attach to no single product, this one included.
Réserve : Within the maintained PubMed results, the Equate name appears only as a brand keyword in a lactation-safety monograph, not in a record measuring whether a product works.
✓Tested by name, with published results
CeraVe Moisturizing Cream
A 528-person study at the University of Miami (NCT04724967) had adults with diabetes-related skin changes use CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser and CeraVe Moisturizing Cream twice a day for 28 days, and posted results on 22 September 2022. At day 33 a physician graded 447 of the 528 much or very much improved, 72 improved, 9 unchanged, and none worse. There was one group and no comparison: nobody used a different cream or no cream, nobody was kept unaware of what they were using, and CeraVe was named as the study's industry partner.
Réserve : A doctor who knew what everyone was using, grading a single group with nothing to compare against, cannot separate the cream from time, from washing, or from expectation.

La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm AP+M
Registered studies do name Lipikar Baume AP+M, the French label for this balm, and the largest followed 4,631 adults (NCT05765461) — but it is an observational cohort run by L'Oreal's own subsidiary Cosmetique Active International, with no control group, and it has posted no results. The only Lipikar records that posted results tested other formulas and both stopped early: Lipikar Balm AP, the earlier formula without the +M, ended with 2 people enrolled (NCT01577628), and an earlier Lipikar Baume ended at 73 because patients were improving on their own with the weather (NCT00931411).
Réserve : AP+ and AP+M are different formulas, and the maintained ClinicalTrials.gov search returned no record using the retail name Balm AP+M, so the match to this 400 mL balm rests on the French Baume labeling.
Only one of these three creams has been measured by name in a study that posted numbers, and that study had one group and no control. The maintained ClinicalTrials.gov and PubMed searches identified no comparison among the three and no result showing that one works better than another as of August 20, 2026.
