Convert every price to cost per 100 mL or 100 g before comparing anything, because package size hides more than brand does. In our dated Canadian sample the same measurement runs from CA$1.57 per 100 g for petroleum jelly to CA$406.25 per 100 mL for a luxury cream. Then check the amount the product actually needs: a sunscreen you under-apply because it is expensive protects less than a cheap one used properly. Prices are a snapshot of two days in one market, so treat the ratios as the durable part and the exact figures as perishable.

The spread inside one shopping basket

Two entries make the point on their own. The Ordinary Salicylic Acid at CA$8.70 looks like the budget choice and Paula’s Choice at CA$52.00 looks like the splurge — but per 100 mL the gap is CA$29.00 against CA$44.07, a difference of about half rather than six times. Small bottles disguise high unit prices.[1]

The second number: how much you have to use

Unit price only answers half the question. The other half is dose. Sunscreen has a defined one — roughly a teaspoon for the face and neck, about 30 mL for a whole adult body — and the tested protection assumes it. Applying a quarter of that does not give you a quarter less protection; it gives you substantially less than the number on the bottle.[2][5]

At CA$4.16 per 100 mL, using a full teaspoon on your face costs a few cents. At CA$71.90 per 100 mL it costs meaningfully more, every day, and that is precisely when people start applying a thin layer to make the bottle last. The expensive product then delivers less real protection than the cheap one.[1][5]

Prescription creams have a dosing unit for the same reason: the fingertip unit, the amount squeezed from a standard nozzle across an adult fingertip, covering roughly two flat hands. It exists because under-treating is the usual failure.[3]

The maths, in three steps

  • Divide price by package size, then multiply to 100 mL or 100 g. Compare only within a category — cleanser against cleanser.[1]
  • Work out how much you need per use, and be honest. Then price the month, not the bottle.[2][3]
  • Ask whether the cheaper product carries the same label claims. For sunscreen, the SPF and broad-spectrum claims are regulated and comparable.[4]

Where paying more can earn its place

Texture is a real reason, not a vain one. A sunscreen you find pleasant is one you apply generously and reapply, and that changes the protection you actually get. If a fluid formula at CA$71.90 per 100 mL is the difference between daily use and a bottle that stays in the drawer, it is doing something the cheap one is not.[5][2]

What paying more does not reliably buy is a different active at a different strength. The regulated claims — SPF, broad spectrum, water resistance, active percentage — are the same claims at both ends of the price range, and a cheaper product carrying them has met the same standard.[4][1]

What these figures are not

They are two days of one market. Prices move, promotions distort, and the same product costs differently across borders. What holds is the shape: within every category there is a spread of at least ten-fold, and the products at the bottom of it are not disqualified from working.[1]

They also say nothing about whether a category helps you. Cost per 100 mL of an ingredient with no evidence behind it is a cheaper way to buy nothing. Decide whether you need the category first, then use the maths to choose within it.[1][5]
