Cost per 100 mL is not cost per treatment here: one product is rinsed off and the other stays on.
For volume-price context only, the two rinse-off cleansers were far cheaper per 100 mL than the leave-on gel. Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash was the lowest package price when checked. This does not establish lower cost per treatment or equal results across formats.

CeraVe Acne Control Cleanser
A 42-person study, run with the maker's involvement, used a very similar 2% salicylic-acid cleanser containing gluconolactone, hectorite, niacinamide and three ceramides for 28 days. Spot counts and the examining doctor's scores both improved over the month. But nobody was compared against a different cleanser or none at all, the report gives no sense of how much of that change could be chance, and the cleanser tested is not confirmed to be the bottle sold in Canada today.
Réserve : The result is a close-formula, uncontrolled signal. It cannot show what the cleanser caused, quantify this Canadian product's effect, or establish equivalence with the leave-on gel.

Neutrogena Oil-Free Acne Wash Fragrance Free
A 35-person Kenvue formula-family study of a 2% salicylic-acid cleanser reported a 33.7% reduction in total lesions from the starting point after 12 weeks. It had no control group and does not establish that the tested formula is this exact current Canadian fragrance-free wash.

- "Thin" evidence: the 2024 American Academy of Dermatology guideline conditionally recommends salicylic acid for acne (low certainty). As summarized in the guideline, that rests largely on one trial of 0.5% salicylic acid — a weaker strength than these products — which cut inflamed spots 25% more and blackheads (open comedones) 11% more than a non-medicated control, with no difference for whiteheads (closed comedones).
- The 2020 Cochrane review did not pool a salicylic-acid estimate; the comparisons it reviewed were low or very-low quality. Two major studies comparing many acne treatments left salicylic acid out entirely.
- Rinse-off evidence exists but remains indirect. A 30-person crossover compared a 2% salicylic-acid cleanser with a 10% benzoyl-peroxide wash: the abstract reported a within-period comedone signal for salicylic acid, while the Cochrane review found no significant between-group comedone difference and the publication provides no usable effect magnitude. Newer close-formula CeraVe and Neutrogena formula-family cleanser studies are uncontrolled. None estimates either exact current Canadian wash, and formula, pH, contact time, and free-acid delivery limit transfer.

- The 6–8-week window comes from both products' Health Canada licence text: stop use if improvement is not apparent within 6–8 weeks. The cleanser's 12+ age comes from its licence record; its brand page shows no age.
