The retinol conversion charts you find online are not measured equivalences — they come from a rough biochemical argument that each conversion step loses activity, and no trial establishes the ratios they print. Use the family order instead: retinyl esters are weakest, then retinol, then retinaldehyde, then prescription tretinoin and adapalene. Choose by what your skin tolerates over twelve weeks rather than by chasing an equivalent number, and remember that base, packaging and how much survives on your skin change the delivered dose as much as the percentage does. If you want a known strength, a prescription retinoid is the only way to get one.

Where the charts come from
Skin converts retinol to retinaldehyde and then to retinoic acid, the molecule that prescription tretinoin already is. Each step is enzymatic and incomplete, so it is reasonable to say retinol is weaker than tretinoin at the same percentage. The charts take that reasonable statement and attach a number to it.[4][1]
The number is where it breaks down. Different charts circulating online give different ratios for the same comparison, and none cites a study that measured the endpoint in skin. Our registry search finds 15 studies naming retinol against 156 naming tretinoin, and none of those is a conversion study.[5][4]

What is solid: the order, not the ratio
Adapalene is the useful exception. It is a synthetic retinoid that acts directly without conversion, it is available without prescription at 0.1% in several markets, and it carries 91 skin studies. If you want prescription-grade evidence without a prescription, it is the one place the shelf actually offers it.[3][5]

Why the percentage on the box tells you less than you think
Retinol degrades with light and air. A 1% retinol in a clear jar opened daily for six months is not delivering 1% by the end, and a 0.3% in an airless opaque pump may deliver more active than a badly packaged 1%. Brands rarely publish stability data, so the percentage is a statement about what went in rather than what reaches your skin.[4][1]
The base matters too. The same percentage in a rich cream and a light gel penetrates differently and irritates differently. This is why people find one 0.5% product harsh and another gentle, and it is a genuine difference rather than imagination.[4]

What to do instead of converting
- Start low and infrequent — twice a week — and increase only when your skin has been comfortable for a fortnight.[1]
- Judge at twelve weeks, not four. That is the window the underlying evidence used.[1][4]
- Step up the family rather than the percentage. Moving from retinol to adapalene does more than doubling a retinol number.[3][5]
- If you want a defined strength with evidence behind it, ask a clinician about a prescription retinoid rather than climbing the cosmetic ladder.[2][1]

Tolerance is the real limit
The strongest retinoid you can use consistently beats a stronger one you abandon after a fortnight of peeling. Irritation is not a sign of the product working, and pushing through it damages the barrier and can leave lasting dark marks on deeper skin tones.[1][4]
That is why the honest answer to "what is this equivalent to" is usually the wrong question. The useful question is what your skin tolerates three or four nights a week, for months, without a break.[1]
