Does your sunscreen deliver the SPF it claims?

Independent testing keeps finding products below their label. You cannot verify SPF yourself, but you can check recalls and stop losing protection to under-application.

The bottom line

You cannot test a sunscreen at home and no shopper can verify a label, which is uncomfortable but true. Independent laboratory testing of products on sale has repeatedly found measured protection below the printed number, with UVA protection weaker still, and the Australian recalls showed the same failure at scale. What you can control matters more than what you cannot: apply roughly a teaspoon to the face and neck rather than the thin smear most people use, reapply every couple of hours outdoors, and check your product against current recall notices. Buy from a retailer that will honour a recall, and treat any sunscreen bought through a marketplace seller you do not recognise as unverifiable.

Three things worth remembering

How the number on the bottle is decided

SPF is measured by applying a set thickness of product to volunteers, exposing patches of skin to controlled ultraviolet light, and comparing how long it takes protected skin to redden against unprotected skin. The manufacturer commissions that test.[2][4]

That design has two consequences. Results vary between laboratories and between panels, because human skin varies. And the amount applied in testing is far more than almost anyone uses in real life, so the printed number describes a best case.[2][1]

Nobody re-tests products routinely once they are on sale. That gap is what independent testing and, in Australia, a regulator ended up filling.[3][1]

What independent testing found

Laboratory work on American products found measured protection lower than labels claimed across a range of sunscreens, and found the shortfall was worse for UVA than for UVB. That is a systematic pattern rather than an occasional bad batch.[1]

In Australia, consumer testing found most of a sample of high-SPF products fell short, one dramatically so. What followed was more revealing than the individual results: the investigation pointed at a shared base formula used across many brands and at the laboratory that had certified the testing.[2][3]

The regulator then opened a consultation on how sunscreens are tested, labelled and overseen, which is a fair signal that the existing arrangement was not doing what people assumed it did.[3]

What a buyer can actually check

Very little about the number itself, and it is dishonest to pretend otherwise. There is no consumer-accessible database of independently verified SPF results. What you can do is verify the things around it.[1][3]

  • Check current recall notices for your brand before assuming a bottle is fine.[3]
  • Note the batch or lot code on the packaging; recalls are issued by batch, not by brand.[3]
  • Buy where a recall will actually reach you, rather than from an unknown marketplace seller.[2]
  • Prefer a product whose maker states its testing standard over one that says only "broad spectrum".[1]

The bigger loss is in your bathroom

Testing applies a generous, measured layer. Most people apply between a quarter and a half of that, and the relationship is not proportional: applying half gives you far less than half the protection.[4]

So a product tested honestly at SPF 50 and applied thinly can deliver less than a product tested optimistically at SPF 30 and applied properly. The label discrepancy is real and it is smaller than the application gap.[4][1]

Roughly a teaspoon for the face and neck, a shot-glass measure for an exposed body, reapplied every couple of hours outdoors and after swimming or towelling. Unglamorous, and it is where the protection is.[4]

What not to conclude from this

The reasonable response is better application and a bit of scepticism about labels, not abandoning sunscreen. A product delivering less than its label still delivers a great deal more than bare skin.[4][1]

Sun protection was never meant to rest on one bottle. Shade, clothing and timing carry a share of it, and none of those depend on a number somebody else certified.[4]
